      A Christmas Carol:

    the silent bah-humbug

'Tis the season — every year at this time — for the various renderings of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. And so it must be, that we, Silent Theatre, tried our hand in it. Not for reasons much different than others-it is a tale of redemption, which finds its way to the heart and warms it as it lifts the spirit. But, this time of year is thought of as a more forgiving, kind and pleasant time of year and we, as creators who are interested in the shared human experience, were enticed by the words of Charles Dickens: it is the only time of year “when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.” So it must be that we dig up ol’ Miser Scrooge and resurrect him through our eyes-a man so set on his own path of loneliness, a man so lost upon the burdens of earthly possessions that to find his humanity, three ghosts must reach deep within the cobwebbed bowels of his heart, brush the dust off his memories and awake his spirit. And with much respect and humble hope for forgiveness from Mr. Dickens and his incredibly powerful words, we do so silently. As this timeless tale transcends all languages and even religions and its message is clear, pertinent: human kind is our business. And all be it a Christmas story, let it not fool you…This is a ghost story, a story of awakening the senses, a story about the human spirit finding its path.

It’s a ghost story after all...
